Felt Mardi Gras Masks for Kids

Hello! I am getting back on track with a fun and easy kid’s craft today: Felt Mardi Gras Masks for Kids.  

As a kid, I loved simple dress-up activities (well, let’s be honest, I still like that) and Mardi Gras is the perfect opportunity to dress up with a fun mask, made even more fun when it is homemade!  

The only non-kid-freely part of this project is the hot glue, so an adult does need to be around, but other than that, this is pretty simple.

But first, let’s talk supplies.  

When I am crafting with kids (which is my favorite way to craft) I like to use supplies that don’t cost much and are COLORFUL!  

For this reason, I usually stick with the supplies from CraftProjectIdeas, found easily at Walmart.

The two major supplies used were felt (the 12 counts bold color pack) and the spangle mix.  

You can find these online or in the craft department at any Walmart.  

Along with these supplies we also used hot glue and elastic for the strap around the head.

Once the supplies were gathered, it was time to cut out the mask shape.  

I made this easy for you by creating a FREE PRINTABLE which you can use as a template.  

There are two styles: Basic which we used for the boys and Winged which we used for the girls.  

Also, since kids come in all sizes I made three different sizes.  

To figure out which one to use for which kid, print and then hold the paper up to each child’s face and roughly measure which one will work best.  

Note, eye shape and placement may need to be slightly adjusted based on the child.

Actually cutting out the masks is very simple. Just grab a marker, trace, and cut!

To adorn our masks we also cut out lots of feather-shaped felt pieces.  

There is no exact science to this, I just went for a rough feather shape.

And then, finally, we got to work crafting.  

We made a huge mess, there was a brief paint disaster, spangles were (and probably are still) all over the floor, babies were crawling all over the table…

But in the end, each kid had a mask and is ready to celebrate Mardi Gras!

Some went for a simple (maybe animal-inspired) approach.

Other’s embraced the Mardi Gras spirit!

And…others really got into color!

We even made a mask for each of the babies. Now, to figure out how to convince them to wear them! Any tips?
