Does EVERYTHING have to be Catholic?
A few weeks ago I was showing our new ABC Saint Cards to one of my cousins when this person, thoroughly unimpressed, gave me a look that said plainly:
“Does EVERYTHING have to be Catholic?”
I didn’t address my cousin’s scowl at the time, but since then I have been turning it over in my mind.
Does everything have to be Catholic? Do we need ABC cards and socks featuring the saints? Do we need a school planner that explores Jesus’s teaching?
But, after reflection, I’ve realized that this is a completely idiotic question.
Why?
Because as Catholics, ALL THINGS ALREADY ARE CATHOLIC.
God’s goodness and truth, expressed most perfectly only through the Catholic Church, touches and informs everything.
Mary and the example of the saints are always before us, urging us to choose love in every situation.
Through God’s design we have minds that can wonder and learn so that we might come to know and understand Him.
Our bodies, created by the very hands of God, were meant to give Him glory, testify to His goodness and be clothed in His glory when this life is over.
Therefore, whether we are planning our school year, learning our ABC’s, organizing our school supplies or getting dressed, everything we do already IS CATHOLIC.

One of the key lessons we are called to teach is that our Faith should inform everything we do. Being Catholic is not something we can limit to one hour on Sundays. Jesus should be always before us and within us.
Therefore, doesn’t it make INFINITE more sense to look down at your feet and see Saints instead of Disney Princesses? After all, aren’t the footsteps of the saints what we desire to follow?
Also, isn’t it so much more meaningful to learn the ABC’s with a glimpse of the great multitude of holy men and women praying for us from heaven?
The Catholic Faith does not belong in a box. It already is a part of all we do and all we are, so let’s surround our children with beautiful objects and experiences that remind them of this reality.

All the unimpressed cousins in the world can continue to scowl. Their looks and the lies of the world will never change the fact that God is here, that He is Truth, and that all things are His.
