Health Care is the first of five that the US Bishops include in the fourth theme of Catholic Social Teaching: Care for the Poor and Vulnerable. JPII reminds us that we should not only care for the poor, but practice a preference for the poor and vulnerable, as often they need special defending in our world.
The Church defends that Healthcare is a basic human right. Since all humans were made in the image and likeness of God we all should have access to life-saving medicine regardless of race, education or financial status. Providing Healthcare for the poor, however, can be very expensive and it often becomes a divisive issue in politics, and even within our families as we attempt to navigate the stress of providing good healthcare for our families.
As Christians, however, we need to focus on the people in need. It is easy (I feel this!) to think about Healthcare in terms of the taxes I pay, which are already shockingly high as a small business owner. However, when we encounter a real person in need of healthcare they are unable to access for one reason or another, we are reminded of the personal aspect of this issue and our need to share our resources as that all people have access to this basic human right.
Our exploration of Freedom of Religion comes directly out of our new book, CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING FOR YOUTH.
