Hello!
Yes, you read correctly. Kool-Aid Watercolor!
We can actually watercolor with Kool-Aid! It’s not just a wonderful sweet fruity drink, it can also be an art supply.
Mind blown?
Good.
And so, if you are ready willing, and able, let’s do this and learn how fun, inexpensive and beautiful watercolor painting with Kool-Aid can be!
Because we are typical people, we do most of our shopping at Walmart–it’s got everything, it’s cheap and there’s one by my house.
Score.
Along with other things we picked up an assortment of unsweetened Kool-Aid mix pouches as well as a 96 oz Ready-To-Drink Kool-Aid Jug.
Both of these products are great for drinking o watercolor painting, really!
Once we were home, groceries put away, kids fed, and put down for naps, I dove into my Kool-Aid watercolor project.
Now, here’s the thing.
We can’t really control how watery the paints become (as you will see in the next step).
Therefore it is important to prepare your watercolor page in a way that will naturally separate the colors.
To do this, pull out some watercolor paper, School Glue, and a Button (or anything around–a quarter, bottle cap, etc).
Place the button on the paper and trace around it with the glue.
Pick the button up, set it next to the circle you have already drawn, and repeat until you have a nice little circle design.
Allow drying completely.
First, mix up what will be the vibrantly colored paint in your creation.
In small bowls mix 1 TBS of water with each packet of Kool-Aid mix.
Once the powder and water are fully combined it is ready to be painted.
This is what you have been waiting for–paint!
Just a quick word about watercolor: Watercolor creations are meant to be softer and more blended than other types of painting.
Don’t get hung up on exact lines and don’t set out to create something overly small and detailed.
We are watercolor painting with Kool-Aid after all!
Have fun!
For my project I filled in each little glue circle I created with a different color.
The glue will work to naturally separate the colors.
I also liked the look when I got a little bit of the paint on the glue outlines–it gave the whole thing a nicely blended look.
As I mentioned before, watercolor is at its best and most romantic, when it is gently blended.
To do this pour a little bit of the 96 oz Ready-To-Drink Kool-Aid into a glass (as if you haven’t been drinking it all along already!!) and use this to gently go over what you have painted and blend the colors together.
Since this Ready-To-Drink version of Kool-Aid obviously has more water than the powder mixed paint, the color will be much lighter.
Since I was working with the Watermelon flavor the Ready-To-Drink Kool-Aid gave my picture a slightly pink tint, which I thought was fun.
Give it a try this summer.
It is the perfect little nap-time project to attempt while sitting out in the sun sipping on some cold sweet Kool-Aid!
And, if this isn’t enough fun for you, Jim Dillard, pro fisherman, could be coming to your local Walmart to help promote the new 96oz bottles!
There will be product giveaways, t-shirts, games, and more fun activities!
