Welcome back!

We are continuing on with our series on the Virtues of the Rosary today.

If you scroll back through previous episodes, you will see that I have already talked about the virtues for the Joyful and Luminous mysteries.

So today we are moving onto the Second Sorrowful Mystery, The Scourging at the Pillar. The virtue assigned to this mystery is Mortification. Gulp, I know!

As just a quick reminder, I did not dream up the idea of assigning virtue to each mystery of the Rosary.

I’m just promoting something taught by many great saints including St. Padre Pio, St. John Paul II, and St. Mother Teresa.  

It’s my hope that this series gives you lots to think about as you pray your daily Rosary. I love meditating on the virtues as I pray.

Here are a few key points from this episode:

• Mortification is the work of “putting to death” our vices, our sinful habits, and the selfish desires that lie beneath it all.
• Christ showed us at the scourging that we are not made for this world. That we should not allow the desires of our flesh to rule us.
• I also talk about ways that we might work to purify our Church, especially now as we deal with yet another sex scandal. And I encourage you all to pray very hard, and in a dedicated way, for the priests that serve you. I also encourage you to teach your children the virtue of mortification so that they might be able to say “no” to their flesh in the future, when they are the leaders of the future Church.

Mortification might seem like a dated idea, but it is still something we need to strive for!
