Salt Dough Ornament: Baby’s First Christmas
I know, I know! Christmas is over and we are all a little sick of ornament ideas, but I am going to post this anyway. I had planned on posting this before Christmas, but my new-baby-blogging-break went on a little longer than expected, and I just know that if I don’t post this now it will never get posted.
Plus, I love it, and I hope you do too!
I had the joy once again this year of having a new baby for Christmas. Above is a picture of her on Santa’s lap at a family Christmas. Already she has grown so much, and I wanted to remember how precious and little she was this first Christmas, so with the help of salt dough, I made an ornament to commemorate it.
If you haven’t worked with salt dough before, it is super easy. Just mix, roll, stamp and bake. Here is the recipe I used:
4 cups flour
I cup salt
1 1/2 cups warm water
Once you have your dough rolled out, use cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Then, take your little one’s hand or foot and simply press it into the dough. Make sure you make a good impression.
Next, bake at 325 for one hour.
When the ornaments are cooled, add paint and an inscription on the back.
Here are the ornaments I made, for my son on his first Christmas last year, and for my daughter this year.
I think the gold worked better. But, regardless, I am excited to have these ornaments for my children. As a kid I always loved putting the ornaments on the tree, and hopefully my children will have fun putting these on the tree and marveling at how very little they were when they celebrated their first Christmas.

awww! how sweet. I did something similar with my daughter as a Christmas ornament. Now that she is about to turn five I’m amazed at how tiny her hand was.

These look precious! When my youngest child was born, my BFF gave me a stack of tins where you do a handprint on their birthday for five years, but I messed up the first year and didn’t get the handprint. I just made one out of ink, but had I known these instructions, I could have made a three-demensional one instead. I’ve pinned this!

Great idea, Nancy! I think it’s good you posted now so whenever someone has a newborn they can make them even if Christmas will be a couple months away!
